Between the Lines

On October 13, 2016, Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away at the age of 88. A year of mourning was declared for the world’s longest-reigning monarch, the end of which will be marked by his final funeral rites, held over five days.

We go behind the scenes as Thailand makes ready for one of the most lavish and extensive state funerals to be held in the modern day. In the centre of old Bangkok, an engineer works on the royal crematorium—a depiction of heaven that looms over 50m, and the tallest built in a hundred years. Members of the royal family prepare for their role in the funeral procession as troops practise the ceremonial drawing of a 222-year-old royal chariot. Sculptors work to bring a mythical Buddhist mountain to life as traditional khon dancers practise for the performance of their lives. Over a year, we witness their personal challenges as they prepare to bid a final farewell to their beloved king.
