The partition of India was one of the most tumultuous historical events of the 20th century. In 1947, British India was divided into two separate states, India and Pakistan. More than ten million people became refugees, and hundreds of thousands lost their lives. 70 years after partition, the legacy of distrust continues to sour relations between the now-nuclear armed neighbours.
